Survival Bracelets

Paracord survival bracelet | Zen Quest Adventures

If you found this page you are probably wondering how can this peace of woven parachute cord (paracord) help me survive in an emergency situation?

The reason is that with some string you can make many things and fix even more. Paracord is tested to hold a load of 249kg (550 lb.) This makes it strong enough for holding very heavy weights but at the same time is light and portable. The cord can be taken apart and the thin fibres inside used independently. Each Zen Quest survival bracelet contains at least 2.4m of full strength military grade paracord.

Outdoor Education in China

What is Outdoor Education?

From Dr. Roger Greenaway:
Outdoor Learning is a broad term that includes: outdoor play in the early years, school grounds projects, environmental education, recreational and adventure activities, personal and social development programmes, expeditions, team building, leadership training, management development, education for sustainability, adventure therapy and more. Outdoor Learning does not have a clearly defined boundary but it does have a common core.

We believe in the power of outdoor education in China, and aim to exceed the highest industry standards when it comes to bringing these experiences to life.

Definition

Outdoor education China -

Put simply, its “organised learning that takes place in the outdoors”.

This could include:

  • Canoeing
  • Rock Climbing
  • Trekking

“Outdoor education draws upon the philosophy, theory, and practices of experiential education and environmental education.

We have a wide range of activities in China that vary based on the location of your choice

When & Where?

When did western style outdoor education first arrive in China?
Probably the first arrival of an outdoor education training centre was Hong Kong Outward Bound in 1970.

What locations are good for outdoor education in China?
China is a vast country with a wide range of landscapes and topography’s, from the humid subtropic’s in the south to the Taklamakan desert in the north west, from the soaring peaks of the Himalaya to the rice fields of central china there is a wealth of outdoor environments to choose from. Programs close to home and far a field are possible with great locations within a few hours drive from Shanghai, Guangzhou, Beijing, Hong Kong and many other cities. Visit our locations page to learn more about our outdoor education in China.

Why Outdoor Education?

Young people growing up in this part of the world have a high pressure school system with an emphasis on classroom learning and exams. Although the classroom is and always will be the backbone of school education, its critical to engage students with real world experiences to build well-rounded members of society.  As we discussed above, our outdoor education in China is a term covering many types of adventure and outdoor provision.

Many people are familiar with the terms experiential education, and environmental education. Experiential education as defined by the Association for Experiential Education is:
a philosophy that informs many methodologies in which educators purposefully engage with learners in direct experience and focused reflection in order to increase knowledge, develop skills, clarify values, and develop people's capacity to contribute to their communities.” www.aee.org
The best environments for experiential learning often involve venturing outside the walls of the classroom and using the wilderness to provide some of the most memorable and stimulating learning opportunities for students.

Environmental Education (as its name implies) aims to educate people about our natural environments. This again ties in perfectly with outdoor education; where learning about the environment is the goal and conducting structured learning in the outdoors (outdoor education) provide the necessary catalyst tying facts to real world experiences.
But why stop there? Let's tie the outdoors, education and experiential education together with the beautiful natural landscapes available in China.
At Zen Quest Adventures we like to refer to this as holistic outdoor education or 'holistic education', a truly multifarious approach. We strive to get students involved in programs before they arrive by putting them in touch directly with local people to arrange their service projects. We also do our best to ensure follow up on their learning when they return to school.

Don’t just visit, stay and change your students' global perspectives

Don’t just visit, stay and change your students' global perspectives.

The Microcampusing idea comes from Craig Tafel, a teacher from Shanghai American School (SAS) who uses a luxury mana house retreat ‘The Linden Centre’ near Dali to run microcampusing for SAS students. Our vision for microcampuses see’s many schools across China making use of multiple locations for running extended microcampus programmes.

Why take a year group away for just a few days or a few weeks? Why not take them away into the countryside for an extended period of time, so they can feel like a true part of the local community? After all, students these days all have laptop computers. They can make use of distance learning resources to give them access to most of the research materials they have in school.

Let Zen Quest Adventures China experts help your school establish and run Microcampuses in the most interesting and far flung corners of the Middle Kingdom. Our multi-lingual staff team and experiential education experts are here to help you every step of the way. We have a fantastic location in Shaxi Yunnan which is primed and ready to go. However Shaxi serves only as a window into many colourful possibilities. Perhaps your school is located in the Guangdong province and wants to keep costs down by travelling overland? Then Danxia Mountain range might be just the place for you. Maybe your school is from Beijing and wants to escape the smoggy and overcrowded city landscape? How about Shengnongjia forest, which boasts some of the highest biodiversity in the world?

Your future classroom awaits

Week Without Walls (WWW)

China, Hong Kong, Taiwan & Thailand

Shaxi rice field, with one student

For many years, a lot of schools define their outdoor activity week as 'week without walls'. A week without walls in its broadest sense, is a week where students can participate in activities outside the school classroom 'walls'. This could include activities such as; service learning, trekking, rock climbing, canoeing, camping and much more. Here at Zen Quest Adventures we strive to make your WWW in China a week your students will remember, where they'll learn and grow as individuals.

Your desired learning outcomes are important to us. We will collaborate with you to create the perfect trip, no matter what it takes. We design our WWW programs with overarching themes, so the whole trip maintains consistent, logical, and progressive themes. Request a sample program today.

Local cooking in Yangshuo

A good example of this is our servant leadership program which aims to:

1. Help students learn specific knowledge and skills related to leadership.
2. Enable students to understand the history, values and beliefs of society.
3. Facilitate the development of individual strengths and leadership styles.
4. Facilitate the development of ethics, values and ethical reasoning.
5. Promote awareness, understanding, and tolerance of other people, cultures and societies.
6. Embody high expectations of, confidence in, and respect for the teens served.

An alternative to our WWW, is the micro campus model. Rather than a week, this is an extended period of time the students are away from school, however they can participate in standard classroom activities as well as experiential, outdoor and community based pursuits.
